Carly D'Angelo Speaks at CB West Parent Council Meeting about her Leadership Roles at Inspiring Teens Magazine
Carly recently was given the opportunity to speak about her Leadership Roles at Inspiring Teens Magazine at the February Parent Council meeting at CB West by her principal, Mr. Bucher. I was really excited for Carly and this opportunity for a few reasons.
The first being it would be an opportunity to Carly to speak in front of a live audience all by herself. After speaking with the rest of the girls at a Student Representative Meeting a couple weeks ago, I felt like this was a great "next step" for her.
The second was because it would be a great opportunity, like Mr. Bucher thought, to have her explain that Leadership doesn't always come in the form of being the Captain of the Basketball team. Leadership opportunities can be found in unconventional places as well. I know teens don't always think unconventionally, and I think this is a great outlet to share that message.
The third was completely selfish. I wanted to hear what Carly had prepared for the parents about what Inspiring Teens Magazine and the CPI Leadership Programs meant to her. The previous evening at the ITM Teen Board of Awesomeness, where Carly is a key member, she had asked how she would answer 2 questions. One about how we are funding the magazine, and one about ... I don't even remember. The point is, she asked very little of me. So when I heard her well thought out speech, followed by her answers to the many parent questions, I was floored by her knowledge and responses.
I was a little emotional with pride for her on my way to CB West High School, but her mom's words afterwards will always stay with me. This morning I told another mom if I could bottle it and sprinkle it like confetti over every teen who walked in my door, I would. Because it was the sense of accomplishment, pride, and confidence that I want them all to have.
I asked her mother if she would write them out so I could share them with others, and she so graciously did. I put them on the website on the ITM Members page, but I also wanted to share them here because they are what every mother dreams for her child.
"My daughter Carly D'Angelo became involved with Conway Productions Inc. and Inspiring Teens Magazine a few months ago.
Carly has always been a very quiet and shy child. I always had to push her to get involved in things. I have watched her come out of her shell and blossom into a bright confident, and very well spoken young lady.
I truly believe it is because of her involvement in the magazine. She recently did a presentation in front of her principal and the parent council at CB West where she goes to school.
She spoke with such pride about what the magazine experience has meant to her, it actually had one of the parents in tears.
Carly was able to talk about the magazine and answered every question from the principal and the parents that was asked of her. If you would have told me a year ago that my child would be able to stand in front of a group of adults and give a presentation, I would have thought you were crazy.
I have to thank Leslie Conway for all of her dedication, time and attention to Carly and the other girls, and this program for making it what is it today.
I couldn't be more proud of Carly and I know that she will graduate and be able to go off to college more prepared because of her experience with Leslie and Inspiring Teens Magazine."
