How to Choose Your Prom Dress for Your Body Type
The Pear- This body has a fuller waist and smaller bust. To showcase your body you should have a fuller or A-line skirt. The top should be fitted and embellished or have a lace overlay to draw attention to the upper half. It is best to go strapless or halter to show off your arms and even out proportions as well. Stay away from mermaid styles that would make the waist look even fuller.
The Bread-This figure resembles more of a rectangular shape. For this body it’s best to look for a waist hugging dress. Ruching or color blocking may be helpful in creating curves and a waistline. Color blocking is when the top of a dress is one color and the bottom another, this creates the illusion of a waistline. Sweetheart neckline can also be used to make the illusion of curves. Avoid the straight cut dresses.
The Apple- This body type has a fuller torso. To accentuate this figure an empire waist and A-line cut with a fuller skirt will be flattering. Having a corseted and beaded top will create a good figure and draws emphasis to the upper part of your body. A v neckline or strapless is best to show off your arms and shoulders. Try to have a one solid color and steer clear of belts that draw a lot of attention to your midsection.
The Eggplant- This figure is very curvy with a fuller bust and hips. For this body type you should show off your curves in a flattering way. The best cut for this type is a form fitting top with a natural waist or mermaid because it hugs you curves. You can play around with belts and necklines. You should avoid empire waist because you don’t want to hide your curves!
The Banana-This body type is long and slim. The objective for this figure is to create curves while showing off your lean body. To do this wearing a fitted dress and adding a fun belt to make a waist line will help your figure. A full or trumpet skirt could also be useful in adding curves as well as getting a dress with a slit. Keep in mind straight cuts will not accentuate your waist.
The Carrot- This body has a big bust and a smaller waist. The goal of this cut is to even out the upper and lower portions of the body to give a nice hourglass shape. To do this try dresses with an A-line cut or a high-lower cut which gives more emphasis to the bottom portion of your figure and evens out the body. A one shoulder cut is good to support your bust. Steer clear of dresses with thin strap or high necklines that will make the bust look even fuller.
